Fashion Diary: 007

I’ve had this dress for absolutely ages (OK, since last autumn) and somehow never got around to wearing it – until today.  We’ve got an exhibition opening at the gallery tonight and thought it would be a good chance to get this dress out of the wardrobe finally.

I never have a clue how to wear this shalwar/dress/caftan thing.  I got it from a local Pakistani boutique, and while I love it, the fact remains I can’t figure the damn thing out.  A big part of the problem is the length on the sides.  Even in tall shoes it drags.  The sash I added, because with the length it’s just too much material all over the place making it look like a technicolor vomit sack; it needs to be reigned in.  The cut is a bit strange so I am hesitant to get it tailored and hemmed up.

Secondly, this is from a set of cards I picked up in a village (Chhomrong, I think?) when, this time last year, I was trekking in the Annapurnas.   This is grade-A Engrish that would be a shame not to share.  ‘Larruping’ is a real word, by the way, albeit one that’s not really been in use for quite some time (“to beat, flog or thrash”).

Thirdly, I’ve been thinking about getting a tattoo again.  It’s always in the back of my mind, but I’m very particular about what I want.  Which is a Polynesian tattoo of Maori or (preferably) Marquesan symbols, and I want to know what the symbols mean and I want them to be directly related to me and I want the whole tattoo to be designed specifically for me.  I’d also like a touch of the kitsch tiki style to be involved.  Man I love tiki kitsch.

So, I’ve come to the conclusion that this is something I am simply going to have to design and draw myself if I ever want it done.  I just need to get on researching Polynesian symbolism.   I dipped into the research briefly and it seems to be something both do-able and enjoyable.  I quite like a good bit of research.

I think I’ve been watching too much Medieval-ish TV lately.  That or I’m subconsciously jonesing for a Renaissance Fest.  Actually, who am I kidding? – there’s nothing subconscious about my love for Renn Fests and my disappointment on missing out on them since I left the states.

headpiece { some little boutique on Jumeirah Beach Rd }

Not a Green Thumb

I am so bad with plants.  Just can’t keep them alive.  And it’s a real bummer because I love having plants and greenery around, but I can guarantee you that when all is said and done, I will kill it despite my best efforts.

Last summer I bought a frangipani and I loved it.  It was my favorite plant.  The flowers were nice and smelled lovely, the palms were lush and it seemed like quite a hardy and easy plant to take care of (or so my research had said).  Then the flowers stopped (which wasn’t too shocking, I understood it was only to flower certain parts of the year) – but then the palms started dying and dropping off, which did worry me.  Figuring this was yet another plant I had failed to properly care for despite my efforts, I left it for dead on my balcony.  I know, nice.

So imagine my shock when it started coming back to life about a month ago!  Apparently frangipanis die off in the winter months unless you live somewhere really hot – properly tropical, I assume.  Never would I have guessed that Dubai in the winter would be too cold for anything, but I was wrong.  I’m so pleased I didn’t kill it and it’s coming back even nicer and fuller than before!

My favorite social event of the year, the Dubai World Cup, took place last week.  I absolutely love this event.  It’s such a great day out with friends, amazing people-watching, plus a great excuse to dress up.  Looking forward to the DWC 2012 already!

I didn’t really get any good photos, but I made sure to get one (low-qual Blackberry) shot of my silk paisley and star embroidered dress – from Temperley London.  The shoes were actually the same I wore last year, from Gina.  They are very comfortable shoes, but I was actually hoping to have a pair of funky Finsk shoes in to wear.  Unfortunately they didn’t get in on time (stuck in Italian customs or something, I’ve been told).  The feather hair piece is my own creation; I took apart last year’s fascinator and re-purposed it.

Fashion Diary: 004

For a lovely afternoon at Art Dubai.   A bit inappropriate for a Muslim country?  Yes, perhaps.  For the most part, I dug into some ooold clothes for this (I hate throwing clothes away, because you just never know).

tank { Custo Barcelona (old) }

camo skirt { Hollister Co (yes seriously, haha & ooold) }

boots { BCBG Max Azria }

horses silk scarf { Custo Barcelona }

belt { Burton (it’s actually a snowboarding belt) }

amber necklace { picked up in Nafplio, Greece }

feather earring { Owlita }

bangles { Louis Vuitton (yes, I wear them a lot, I love them) }

Continuing the feather trend, I made a feather hair clip over the weekend (I can never get enough feather stuff).  I spent a day re-purposing last year’s massive feather fascinator that I worse to the Dubai World Cup.  First I made a new feather piece to wear to the DWC next weekend, then with the left-overs I made this hair clip.  Feather hair clip inspiration via – A Beautiful Mess blog.
